Overshot Yardage

Overshot Yardage, originally uploaded by davidscf.

16-shaft overshot designed by me, being woven on my Ashford 16-shaft table loom.

The yarn is 2/40 NM cotton (approx 10,000 ypp - around 26/2 equivalent) and is being used for tabby and doubled for the pattern weft.

The yardage is intended to be used for a garment of some kind, depending on how the fabric turns out.

Overshot Bath Towel

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

The first bath towel was cut off the loom to finish it so I could take it for a test drive before weaving more. This baby sucks up water like nobody’s business, so I’m calling it a success. My only concern is the size of some of the floats (up to 13 mm/0.5″) which might snag if gifting them to someone who wears jewellery. I still have enough for another towel on the loom, so I might rethread for one of the tied unit weaves for the second one.

The finished towel measures 1.66 m x 0.70 m (65″ x 27″) and weighs 690 g (1.5 lb).

Cutting

Cutting, originally uploaded by davidscf.

Finished cutting out the pattern pieces for my flat cap. Cutting into handspun/handwoven fabric for the first time wasn’t nearly as nerve-wracking as I expected it to be.

The baby cotton boll I photographed two weeks ago.

Hard to believe around half a million fibres are growing inside.

Flat cap yardage

Flat cap yardage, originally uploaded by davidscf.

A big crafting weekend! Wove and finished the handspun yardage for my flat cap project. Now I just have to suck up the courage to sew it. My entire sewing experience is pretty much hemming, so I’m a little nervous about screwing it up.

Also finished the spinning for my Riddari (Falkland singles) and cast on a sleeve last night before bed.

Cotton Flowers

Cotton Flowers, originally uploaded by davidscf.

The cotton flowers start turning pink around 24 hours after they open. Following this, the flowers wither and fall, leaving behind a small, green boll containing around 30 seeds and the all-important cotton fibres.

As the fibres continue to grow and thicken within the boll, it enlarges until it becomes approximately the size of a small fig.
